Liquid Architecture - About

Liquid Architecture 10

Liquid Architecture 10: Festival of Sound Arts was a landmark occasion for the festival and for sound culture in Australia. Celebrating its tenth consecutive year in 2009, the Liquid Architecture sound festival ran for four weeks and went to seven cities across Australia, presenting an exciting program of contemporary sound arts. With a decade of experience to draw upon, the diverse program featured live events and installations showcasing the highest quality sound work in an intense focused listening environment, privileging our most unsung sense: listening.

The breadth of diversity of artists and artistic practices included meticulous recorded work, improvised instrumental performance, new sound for screen work, radical uses of digital technology, inventive self-made sound making devices and historically informed practices.

Who was responsible?

Liquid Architecture was born out of the Sound department in the School of Art at RMIT University, Melbourne Australia in collaboration with RMIT Union Arts. The 10th festival was curated by practicing artists; Melbourne based co-founding national director Nat Bates, assisted by Bianca Durrant and Camilla Hannan, Brisbane based Lawrence English from ROOM40, in Sydney Jen Teo from Plum Industries and Shannon O'Neill from Alias Frequencies, in Central Victoria director Jacques Soddell from cajid media, in Cairns Nick Mills from On Edge and in Perth Tura New Music director Tos Mahoney.

The Liquid Architecture 10 festival was supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding and advisory body. Touring Australian artists were supported by Sound Travellers.

Liquid Architecture 10: Sydney was supported by City of Sydney and New South Wales Department of the Arts, Sports and recreation, the Victorian season by Arts Victoria. Asmus Tietchens and Thomas Köner's visit was supported by the Goethe Institute Australia. Perlonex's visit was supported by the Berlin Senate Cultural Affairs Department. Jason Kahn's visit to Australia was made possible by Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.

LUKAS SIMONIS (NL)

Photo : solo in deventer, willie, 2007

Lukas Simonis has his roots as an instrumentalist and musical 'activist' in the industrial music and noise rock of the 80s. Being a part of the Rotterdam jazzbunker scene (a Collective that consisted of heavy drug induced punk rockers, freejazzers, early electronic musicians and pre-postrock combos) he discovered the delimited world of improvisation. In the meantime and after he played in bands like Dull Schicksal, Trespassers W, Morzelpronk, AA Kismet, Liana Flu Winks, VRIL and Coolhaven.
