Liquid Architecture 11, 2010

Design: Karis Sim

In June and July 2010, celebrating its eleventh consecutive year, the Liquid Architecture sound festival ran for four weeks and went to seven cities across Australia, presenting an exciting program of contemporary sound arts. The diverse program featured live events and installations showcasing the highest quality sound work in an intense focused listening environment, privileging our most unsung sense: listening.

Who was responsible?

Liquid Architecture was born out of the Sound department in the School of Art at RMIT University, Melbourne Australia in collaboration with RMIT Union Arts. This 11th festival was curated by practicing artists; Melbourne based co-founder Nat Bates, Brisbane based Lawrence English from ROOM40, in Central Victoria Jacques Soddell from cajid media, in Cairns Nick Mills from On Edge, in Perth Tura New Music's Tos Mahoney and in Sydney assisted by Thomas Knox Arnold.

In 2010 Liquid Architecture was supported by Arts Victoria, the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund and the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Lionel Marchetti and Yoko Higashi's visit was supported by the French Embassy Australia.

Lionel Marchetti Natura Morta
Why pile fruit on a table with a single loud speaker hidden underneath, and leave it to rot for two weeks? Natura Morta gives us a strange object; a visual sound installation of dead things, a sculpture combining nature and electric technology, a rotting sculpture, it’s beauty a result of natural chemistry. The colours fade, slowly, with time - will the sound rot too? Does the sound follow the colours? The light will give to the sculpture a feeling of a moving shadow. Natura Morta is an eye which speaks from the burning of the fire of time.

Artist Talk  Friday 2 July  5:00 – 6:00 pm with Lionel Marchetti discussing the art of the loudspeaker.

Semantic Clutter is the creative detritus as generated throughout the artists work process. It is their fleeting ideas, forgotten moments of genius and experimental experiments that fall by the wayside during their pursuit of the elusive final piece.
In alignment with the Liquid Architecture ethos, ten sound and new media artists will inhabit West Space Gallery over a period of 17 days to question, construct and collaborate amongst themselves. Punters are invited to experience their Semantic Clutter on a first-hand basis via a range of openhouse events. These include alternating exhibitions, an unlocked rehearsal door where you may stumble across a "Work In Progress" and closing night performances. Detailed Semantic Clutter programs are available at the gallery and online.

Madeleine Flynn
Robin Fox

Performance interruptions occur daily during the exhibition period, accumulating over the entire period. On the first day, one piece is performed. By the last day, all pieces are performed.

Madeleine and Tim commissioned a collection of composers to create new work to become part of a larger piece, responding to their year of birth in the Chinese zodiac. Artists created a collection of objects, scores, instructions, installations and video which Madeleine and Tim have assembled into an interactive sound exhibition, a chamber orchestra of sound. constellation imagines these entanglements of artistic connection and considers the interaction of people in the process of creation. constellation is supported by the New Music Network, Liquid Architecture and Arts Victoria.

MELBOURNE Installation @ Tape Projects Space 9 - 11 July 2010

Chronox
Fri 9, Sat 10, Sun 11 July. Opening 6pm Friday 9. Free entry.
Tape Projects, 1/81 Bouverie St. Carlton

For three nights the Tape Projects space in Carlton will house a series of new Chronox devices, games and publications designed to absorb the viewer into its simple temporal mechanics, to be activated by and evolve in the mind of the audience.

Chronox creates an environment with which to escape the motion of time. Transforming rhythm, complex patterns, phasing synchronicities and utopian architecture constitute parts of a Chronox machine engineered to distort temporal perception. The work meditates on the shared qualities of nostalgia and utopia, by coaxing an audience outside of chronological flow, out of their own time and place, into a world where time ceases to move forwards.

Chronox has featured recently at the MONA FOMA Festival in Hobart, First Draft Gallery in Sydney, Lamington Drive in Melbourne and PICA in Perth.

New Chronox editions on vinyl and in print will be available.

"The installation is beautiful, calming and suggests multiple interpretations.”  Ted Snell (from: The Australian, May 09, 2009)

“It is as if we’ve entered the unwitnessed mechanisms of time itself; a world in parallel, unaffected by the rotation of the globe and passing of the seasons. Chronox is a virtuality that transcends the arbitrary ticking of a clock. It is a world that exists between the cracks.” Dan Rule (from: The Age, A2, June 12, 2010)

Supported by the City of Melbourne and Arts Victoria.
