Blog Entry 12 - At Crate59, Cairns

Monday, 13 July 2009 00:00 Jared Davis

Crate59 is a Cairns based artist run initiative. At a slightly worn warehouse space behind Crate59, in collaboration with On Edge, Liquid Architecture's fifth festival in Cairns took place featuring local artist Return Return, Anthea Caddy with Thembi Soddell and Perlonex.

The warehouse space was full of character and acoustically rich, inside this site the sounds of the performers were lively without becoming over-saturated with reverberation. This allowed for a terrific synchronicity between the various instruments performed and it was clear that the artists enjoyed working with the space, delivering very strong performances.

Blog Entry 11 - Liquid Architecture Melbourne

Sunday, 12 July 2009 00:00 Jared Davis

Liquid Architecture 10 (LA10) in Melbourne saw the festival return to the Arts House at North Melbourne Town Hall. These concerts were the largest shows in attendance at LA10, and additional events were held too including the Infinite Music Machine installation by Dale Gorfinkel, Rosalind Hall and Peter Blamey, John Grzinich's Location Sound Films (both at West Space); a forum at the Tape Projects Warehouse Space held by the Within Earshot collective; and a screening at the Melbourne Planetarium featuring Edgard Varèse's Poème électronique. Melbourne, both internally and externally to the festival, seemed to host one of the most active dialogues in LA10 so far regarding the festival's role, and the form that it manifests was contemplated strongly in its tenth year. Liquid Architecture began in Melbourne and understandably the 'product' of the festival and its individual model seemed the most fully formed in its city of origin.

Blog Entry 10 - Tenth Anniversary Celebration, Horse Bazaar

Friday, 10 July 2009 00:00 Jared Davis

In celebration of Liquid Architecture's tenth year, the Melbourne program featured something slightly uncharacteristic of past LA festivals in the city: a bar event. At Horse Bazaar, host of the regular Stutter sound nights curated by Annalee Koernig, performances were given by Joel Stern, Martin Kay with Nick van Cuylenburg, Vijay Thillaimuthu and a DJ set by bags. Rather than existing as a space for total focussed listening, the bar can provide a contact site of engagement; its informal nature welcoming experimentation and risk in performances, as well as providing a physical environment for the meeting and sharing of a dialogue amongst the audiences. It is an element in the development of underground music in Australia that cannot be (and is not) overlooked.

Blog Entry 9 - Bendigo

Thursday, 09 July 2009 00:00 Jared Davis

The Old Fire Station in Bendigo hosted the second Central Victorian concert of Liquid Architecture 10. Of particular interest were two film works. Firstly, a screening of Germaine Dulac’s Surrealist film La Coquille et le Clergyman, with Thomas Köner performing live his contemporary sound design for the work. Secondly, David Shea presented a tribute to Canadian filmmaker Arthur Lipsett. Lipsett’s film collage works featured found sound and visual segments that were scrambled and rearranged in order that the semiotics of each informed each other to create new meanings. Shea performed what he described as “Lipsett on Lipsett” and showed re-collaged Arthur Lipsett films, with a live soundtrack by the artist featuring rearranged soundtrack samples from the original works.
