Comrades, we hear Mayday in three related but distinct ways – as the annual celebration of workers’ rights; as the day of pagan rites marking the end of a harsh winter (north) or one to come (south); and as the international distress call (Maydaymaydaymayday).  In each, the human voice is calling out for an answer within others.

Polyphony describes a ‘texture’ in which two or more independent voices are discernible, so a ‘polyphonic methodology’ has much artistic and social potential: to make difference audible, to ‘sound’ disobedience, choreograph dissonance, and explore harmonies.

This Mayday, our polyphonic social brings together many voices:

Kym Maxwell leads a Steiner Verse, drawing from the Steiner Education systems values of holistic education that acknowledge children’s internal and external connection to nature, self and others. For this work the students of Sophia Mundi Class 6, and their teacher Tanya, will recite verse in rounds expressing the interconnectedness of student to teacher, student to student and class to the community.

The spectacularly masked band Prophets will present their stylefree approach to collective music-making and polyphonic multiplicity with saxophones, percussion, and self-made instruments.

Lara Thoms presents How to piss off the music industry and the art world – an exploratory model, an experimental lecture looking at the high selling music act The KLF (Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond) who believed that absolutely anyone could have a number one hit –  releasing an extensive how-to guide in 1988. Thoms will performatively revisit their methodologies including harassing ABBA, burying music awards at Stonehenge and burning a million pounds – plotted out through a small diorama of the entire universe.

 

Zoe Scoglio is Rehearsing the Revolution, through a series of collective and participatory public soundings farewelling the old and heralding in the new. Uniting planetary and political movements, Rehearsing the Revolution draws upon historical, cultural and ceremonial practices from protests, parades, and processions. Scheduled for the first day of May, when the Southern Hemisphere begins its entry into the darker half of the year, the work attempts union between us, and the rotating planet we live on—in the age of the Anthropocene.
