Stairwell is a site-specific durational performance expressing resonance and harmonic rattles across the height of a metal fire escape staircase at RMIT University. This performance employs tuned vibrations from an array of tactile shakers, deployed across the levels of the stairwell.
Through synthesis, Stairwell tunes vibrations to reveal the dormant acoustic characteristics of the structure, creating a multi channel composition spread spatially and physically. This provides a highly immersive tactile and spatial experience, as the sensation of vibration through the feet and hands combine with three-dimensional auditory experience.
The Entry Point: Entry to the venue will be via Building 9 on Franklin street, close to the intersection of Franklin and Victoria Streets. Walk down the laneway behind Building 9 and look for the Liquid Architecture Signage. It is the second stairwell on your right. Please note: access is not via Bowen Street, it is the laneway that runs between RMIT Building 9 and the back of Old Melbourne Gaol.
The stairwell is under cover so this event will go ahead whatever the weather!
