Alan Licht is a musician and writer based in New York City. He is equally known for his guitar work in the underground rock bands Run On and Love Child and in the experimental groups the Blue Humans and Text of Light. He has also worked with Yoko Ono, Tom Verlaine, and Arthur Lee as well as artists Christian Marclay, Gary Panter, and Michael Snow. He has released eight solo guitar albums and more than a dozen duo and trio records of improvised music. Licht is the author of Common Tones: Selected interviews with artists and musicians 1995-2020 (Blank Forms) and Sound Art Revisited (Bloomsbury).

Judith Hamann is a composer/performer born in Australia who lives and works in Berlin.

Described as an “extraordinary Australian cellist” (the Guardian), and as a composer who “destroys the fiction of the musician who lives and works outside conventional parameters and puts in its place a series of compositions that are fundamentally humane” (Louise Grey, WIRE Magazine), their work encompasses performance, improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, field recording, electronics, site specific generative work, and micro-tonal systems in a deeply considered process based, or even ‘nomadic’ approach to creative practice.

Currently their work is focused on an examination of expressions and manifestations of 'shaking’ in solo performance practice, a collection of new works for cello and humming, and ongoing research surrounding ‘collapse’ and the ‘de-mastering’ of instrumental practice.

Judith has studied contemporary classical repertoire with renowned cellists including Charles Curtis and Séverine Ballon, as well as developing a strong practice in improvisation and sonic arts through collaborative projects both in Australia and internationally. Judith enjoys thinking and working with other artists which includes Marja Ahti, Joshua Bonnetta, Dennis Cooper, Pascale Criton, Charles Curtis, Lori Goldston, Sarah Hennies, Yvette Janine Jackson, Anike Joyce Sadiq, Éliane Radigue, and La Monte Young. Judith is a member of Golden Fur, the Harmonic Space Orchestra, Yvette Janine Jackson’s Radio Opera Workshop, and has duo projects with Anthea Caddy, James Rushford, Sholto Dobie, and Lori Goldston.

Judith has performed widely with festivals including Tectonics (Glasgow, Athens), UnSound (NYC), Musikprotokoll (Graz), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), Maerzmusik (Berlin),  CTM (Berlin), The Venice Biennale of Music, The Los Angeles Philharmonic Fluxus Festival (LA), Tokyo Experimental Festival, AURAL (Mexico City), SiDance Festival (Seoul), ZhDK Alvin Lucier 85th Birthday Festival (Zurich), Counterflows (Glasgow), No Idea Festival (Austin), Earshot Jazz Festival (Seattle), Berlin Jazz Festival, Ojai Festival (Ojai), The Now Now (Sydney), Adelaide International Arts Festival (Adelaide), Supersense (Melbourne), and Liquid Architecture (AU). Other performance highlights include improvised or repertoire presentations at Cafe Oto (London), Dia Art Foundation (NYC), Steim Institute (Amsterdam), Logos Foundation (Ghent), LaSalle University (Singapore), SuperDeluxe (Tokyo), O’ Gallery (Milan) and Tempo Reale (Florence).

Judith is a champion of new and rarely performed music, immersive approaches to sound, and engages with a range of interdisciplinary and experimental projects including collaborative work with visual artists Keith Deverell, Sabina Maselli, and film makers Joshua Bonnetta and Benedetta De Alessi. They have also presented installation work in Melbourne, San Diego, the Noosa Hinterlands, and at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Judith has been an artist in residence at Tokyo Wondersite Aoyama, HIAP (Suomenlinna), Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart), Kunstmeile Krems Betriebs GmbH (Krems), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), and Syros Sounding Paths Residency (Syros). They are also a regular member of the APRA award winning regional music program (2016 tour) and Sonus Ensemble through TURA New Music Australia, working in community in the Kimberley region of Australia.

Judith has performed or composed music released on labels including Blank Forms, Black Truffle, Longform Editions, Saltern, Pogus, Another Timbre, SUPERPANG and Marginal Frequency.

Judith holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from UC San Diego, majoring in contemporary cello performance.

Robbie Avenaim is an Australian/Egyptian drummer and sound artist with an international reputation for bold, sonic exploration.

Focussed primarily on percussion and instrument building/percussion installations, his practice spans the domains of free improvisation and avantgarde composition. Avenaim has been at the forefront of the Australian experimental music scene both as a performer and a curator. Over the past 30 years Robbie has developed a unique and personal musical language on the drums, combining traditional and extended techniques with physical modification of the Drums. Modifications have included extending use of the instrument’s, various motorised percussive mechanisms and in so doing, provide greater scope for both composing and performing. As a drummer / composer / instrument builder, Avenaim’s musical ideas are inseparable from the instruments he design’s. The design of new instruments is an integral part of the compositional process.

Avenaim was also the co-founder and organiser of the legendary WHAT IS MUSIC? Festival, Australia’s premier annual touring showcase of local and international experimental music from 1994-2012 and has since organised many significant sound-based exhibitions, performances and festivals in Australia and overseas, which have been essential for the local growth and international prestige of Australia's avant-garde musical reputation. Avenaim is currently the drummer for AAA trio featuring Oren Ambarchi, Chris Abrahams (Pianist of the NECKS).

AVENAIM conceived SARPS (Semi Automated Robotic Percussion System) as a way of introducing inhumanly intricate, fast and dense rhythmic embellishments into his acoustic performance practice. Drawing inspiration from the Modernist abstraction of 20th century composition, SARPS incorporates the philosophies behind rhythmic complexity as it was explored by composers like Conlon Nancarrow (with his Player Piano studies) and Iannis Xenakis (whose stochastic approach introduced algorithmic parameters as a compositional technique). 

SARPS is essentially a human/machine interface which can be imagined as a logical extension of the pioneering efforts of these composers to introduce randomized elements into music to expand its boundaries. Put simply, SARPS is a robotic midi device used in performance that when programmed, can be used much like a synthesizer to strike drums. AVENAIM has also used in SARPS in various installations.
