Rully Shabara explores the human voice as a medium of creation, and language as a material for experimentation. 

Born in Palu, Indonesia, 1982. Dedicated in exploring human voice as a medium of creation, and language as a material to experiment with amd initiated numerous concept-based projects around voice as the main element. Rully has delivered workshops around the globe that focus on using human voice as a rich resource to explore primal expression and improvisations.

Rully is one part of Indonesian musical pioneers Senyawa, an important band for it’s time as one of the first musicians to contextualise the relationship between traditional musics and contemporary new musics coming out of SE Asia and the ‘Global South’. He has also collaborated with many notable international musicians and artists from all kinds of spectrum such as Keiji Haino, Stephen O`Malley, Otomo Yoshihide, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Damo Suzuki, Yoshida Tatsuya, Trevor Dunn, Arrington DeDionyso, Justin Vernon, Jessica Ekomane, DJ Sniff, Greg Fox, and many more.

Rully Shabara

Karina Utomo is an extreme metal vocalist and composer. Her vocal practice explores multi-disciplinary forms of extreme-metal, experimental cross-cultural practices and extra-normal voicing.

Utomo’s compositional practice explores the duality of intergenerational trauma and power, and tensions between tradition and rebellion. She has collaborated extensively with artists in Australia and internationally across a broad range of industrial, avant-garde improvisation, grindcore and black metal genres in numerous forms and settings.

She has been commissioned for compositional and performance works by Curā8 which exhibited at Project 8 Gallery; Platform Indonesia with Rully Shabara of Senyawa (The Substation); Cat Hope for the Peggy Glanville Hicks Address (Melbourne Recital Centre, Elder Conservatorium of Music) and Flash Forward Festival. She has performed at music and arts festivals such as Download (with Slayer and Anthrax), Dark Mofo, Mona Foma, Soft Centre x VIVID, Soft Centre UNFURL, Soundrenaline (Indonesia), Rising Festival (Make It Up Club), Melbourne Music Week, Perth Festival and the Melbourne Writer’s Festival.

High Tension’s critically acclaimed releases have been nominated for both ARIA and AIR awards for ‘Best Heavy Album’ and received The Age Music Victoria Award. She was one of four voice soloists in ‘Speechless’ (2019) — an opera by composer Cat Hope which was awarded the AMC APRA AMCOS Art Music Award in 2020 for Best New Work.

Karina Utomo is an extreme metal vocalist, composer and co-founder of extreme metal projects Rinuwat, KILAT and High Tension. Utomo’s vocal practice explores multi-disciplinary forms of extreme-metal, experimental cross-cultural practices and extra-normal voicing. Aspects of Utomo’s practice are informed by and interwoven with Javanese mythology and storytelling.

Rama Parwata is a Naarm/Melbourne-based musician, composer, and curator who has a distinguished reputation for his audacious and technical aural explorations in sound, texture and rhythm on the drum-kit, drawing influence from Jazz, Extreme Metal, and Gamelan music from his Balinese and Indonesian heritage.

In 2021, Rama released his debut album, Tekanan, on Cassauna / Important Records to critical acclaim. He currently plays drums in local metal ensembles including the Doom Metal band Whitehorse, exploratory Black Metal band Kilat, and the experimental gamelan/metal trio Rinuwat. Since 2019, Rama has been a co-curator and committee member of the Make It Up Club.

Since 1998, Make It Up Club has been presenting, nurturing and promoting improvised music and sound performances, prioritising musicians who challenge the boundaries of current musical trends while providing performers with a stable and supportive environment to exhibit recent explorations in improvised sound.

This event is being held on stolen land. We pay our respects to elders past and present, and we acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. MIUC and LA will support paying the rent by donating a portion of the door sales to WAR, the Warriors of Aboriginal Resistance.
