YL Hooi is the project of Valya Ying-Li Hooi, inhabiting a subtle and mysterious realm of furtive, dubbed-out song, sparse electronic percussion, and distant winds. Hooi’s work is produced in close collaboration with Tarquin Manek, in the live setting, the pair use voice, trumpet, bass clarinet, guitar, bass, drum machines and synths, and are keenly aware of improvisational possibilities and the vicissitudes of audience, venue, and acoustic space. Hooi’s protean music is haunted and seductive, her voice trailing off into an echoed infinity anchored to body-shaking foundations.

Together, Bhairavi Raman and Nanthesh Sivarajah, perform violin, percussion and improvised experiments voicing bicultural identity through Carnatic and Western Classical forms. With formidable traditional knowledge and technical mastery across violin, Mridangam, Kanjira, Ghatam, Morsing, and drum kit, the pair merge concepts and techniques across performances in Australia and internationally, including some of South India’s oldest and most distinguished music venues such as the Madras Music Academy.
