Julieth Torres Valoyes, A.K.A. DJ. Julia Towers is a DJ. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, her roots consist of a mix between Chocó, in the Pacific region, and Boyacá, in the interior of Colombia.

Julia's musical selection is a mix between old school and alternative music, as well as fresh and funky, going through various genres, taking you on a magical journey that you will not want to end, transmitting a message of union without borders because for Julia, music knows no limits.

Kelman Duran is a Dominican/American musician, and visual artist.

Duran started taking music seriously when he moved to Los Angeles. Born and raised in New York City, Duran graduated from LaGuardia and moved to South Korea before studying at CalArts.

As a DJ and producer, he is mostly affiliated with LA’s Rail Up crew, HUNDEBISS Records in Milan, and Riobamba’s Apocalipsis label, who also recently put out his album, 13th Month. The creation of the record was inspired by indigenous moon cycles that Duran learned about while living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he shot a documentary titled To the North.

While he sees his music as a purely emotional counterpart to his visual arts and film work, his artistic and scholarly interests focus on issues of racism, police brutality, and the interplay between disenfranchised groups and civil architecture.

Karina Utomo is an extreme metal vocalist and composer. Her vocal practice explores multi-disciplinary forms of extreme-metal, experimental cross-cultural practices and extra-normal voicing.

Utomo’s compositional practice explores the duality of intergenerational trauma and power, and tensions between tradition and rebellion. She has collaborated extensively with artists in Australia and internationally across a broad range of industrial, avant-garde improvisation, grindcore and black metal genres in numerous forms and settings.

She has been commissioned for compositional and performance works by Curā8 which exhibited at Project 8 Gallery; Platform Indonesia with Rully Shabara of Senyawa (The Substation); Cat Hope for the Peggy Glanville Hicks Address (Melbourne Recital Centre, Elder Conservatorium of Music) and Flash Forward Festival. She has performed at music and arts festivals such as Download (with Slayer and Anthrax), Dark Mofo, Mona Foma, Soft Centre x VIVID, Soft Centre UNFURL, Soundrenaline (Indonesia), Rising Festival (Make It Up Club), Melbourne Music Week, Perth Festival and the Melbourne Writer’s Festival.

High Tension’s critically acclaimed releases have been nominated for both ARIA and AIR awards for ‘Best Heavy Album’ and received The Age Music Victoria Award. She was one of four voice soloists in ‘Speechless’ (2019) — an opera by composer Cat Hope which was awarded the AMC APRA AMCOS Art Music Award in 2020 for Best New Work.

Karina Utomo is an extreme metal vocalist, composer and co-founder of extreme metal projects Rinuwat, KILAT and High Tension. Utomo’s vocal practice explores multi-disciplinary forms of extreme-metal, experimental cross-cultural practices and extra-normal voicing. Aspects of Utomo’s practice are informed by and interwoven with Javanese mythology and storytelling.

The first program Poly-rhythmic #1, sees our guest artist Dominican/American DJ Kelman Duran chat about his sounds and film collaborations where we will explore the ideas and the deeper concepts behind his work.

Kelman Duran alongside being a music producer is a filmmaker and visual artist, his artistic and scholarly interests focus on issues of racism, police brutality, and the interplay between disenfranchised groups and civil architecture.

Joining Kelman on the night will be Indonesian/Australian musician, performer and extended vocal singer Karina Utomo, who will discuss in detail how her practice is informed by and interwoven with Javanese mythology and storytelling.

Kelman and Karina will be joined by creative producer, radio DJ and announcer, Samira Farah (The Score, RRR) who will guide the conversation for this edition of Poly-rhythmic.

Artist talk, meal and music will be held at The Music Market with Kelman Duran’s and Karina's films screening free from 12pm to 10pm at Composite Gallery.

We will enjoy delicious vegetarian eats by Vola foods and DJing by Julia Towers.
